Where I’m From
By: Simone Nabors
I am from spatulas that look like spoons,
From macaroni and cheese and fried chicken,
From endless dinner conversations and unexpected life lessons.
I am from Trouble, Sorry, and Spit on family game nights.
I’m from busy city nights,
With blaring sirens and flashing lights.
I am from a city that doesn’t sleep,
But I am from learning to doze off anyway.
I am from “Do good things, and great things will happen.”
From “Hard days are the best days to build character.”
I am from a family where the sky isn’t the limit
Because there are footprints on the moon.
I’m from “Grandma, I talkin’ too much?”
From asking constant questions,
And always being told, “You should look it up.”
I’m from “Never stop learning,”
And “When in doubt, Google it.”
I am from big heads and bigger personalities.
From sitting by myself on planes,
But remembering not to talk to strangers.
I am from playing by myself and making up games,
And from sharing with my toys when no one else was around.
I’m from Olive Gardens and funny car rides.
From lefts that mean rights and not-so-scenic scenic routes.
I am from Peter of the Earth.
From spoken word, and words left unspoken.
I’m from baking white cakes and throwing pinecones in the ocean.
I am from hard work.
From getting up every day and trying my hardest.
From forgetting reality and aiming high.
I am from falling down,
But getting up and asking “Who pushed me?”
